The 7 Secrets of Shelf Ready Packaging

In retail, the performance of your packaging affects your bottom line.
The following 7 secrets will make your shelf ready packaging really stand out.

  Creative ExcellenceLet us wow you

1. Enhance the consumer experience
Shelf ready packaging is not just about getting things onto the shelf but it’s also about enhancing the consumer experience. Shelf ready packaging can make products look tidier and keep your products together. However if the design does not enable easy access to the product, negative views can result.

2. Purchase Shelving Units

Follow the lead of United Biscuits and purchase shelving units so you can test shelf-ready packaging yourself.

3. Let the primary packaging sell the product
Ensure that the primary packaging rather than the secondary packaging sells the product. The secondary packaging should complement the primary packaging but shouldn’t be the key selling point. Most shoppers don’t recognise shelf ready packaging on the shelves and only do when it is not implemented properly.

4. Ensure packaging is fit for purpose
In some cases shelf ready packaging can restrict space to the extent that some products are more off-sale than without shelf ready packaging. Shelf ready packaging must be the right packaging for the product in the right space on shelf. It is now possible to calculate the optimal size of a pack for a particular type and quantity of product for the appropriate size of shelf and for a known rate of sale and replenishment.

  5. Creativity is a team effort
Having packaging that is well structured and asthetically appealing can often be difficult, especially when working with multiple companies who deliver different parts of the solution. By working with a team based in one location, you can ensure the structure and graphics are integrated allowing your products to stand out on the shelves.

6. Identify your products clearly
Branding the box plays an important role for shelf stackers as well as the customer. It can be difficult to find certain products in dimly lit back-stores, and the problem is even greater for staff who don’t speak English. It is therefore important to have text and print both easily identifiable on the product.

7. Meet the 5 key components
ECR Europe has developed the following guidelines to ensure shelf ready packaging meets 5 key components. Outers should be:

• easy to identify,
• easy to open,
• easy to merchandise,
• easy to shop,
• easy to dispose of or recycle.

*Proof of concept includes designing both the structure and graphics of a box of your choice. Printing for the proof in concept would be in black. Should you want your proof of concept in colour, there would be a small fee of £75 to cover costs which would be deducted from your first order.
